MEZENCORE / Learn
Image formats, explained
Choose a format for the job—not just the smallest number.
Inputs and outputs are different
MEZENCORE can read more formats than it can export. Some inputs are decoded by included libraries, while others rely on the browser. A recognized extension alone does not guarantee a readable file.
| Format | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG / JPG | Yes | Yes |
| PNG | Yes | Yes |
| WebP | Browser-dependent | Browser-dependent |
| ICO | Included decoder | Included encoder |
| HEIC / HEIF | Included decoder; file variants can differ | No |
| TIFF | Included decoder; not every variant is supported | No dedicated TIFF export |
| AVIF, GIF, SVG | Browser-dependent preparation or decoding | No dedicated export |
| JPEG XL / JXL | Experimental: requires browser decoding | No dedicated export |
For less common inputs, explicitly select JPG or PNG instead of relying on Default, and check the downloaded file. Default retains supported output types or uses a fallback; it is not a universal same-format round trip.
Choose an output
JPEG for photographs
JPEG is a practical choice for photos when a smaller file matters more than exact pixel preservation. Lower quality can introduce visible artifacts. JPEG does not preserve transparency.
PNG for transparency and crisp graphics
PNG suits transparent images, diagrams and screenshots with sharp edges. It can be larger than JPEG for photos, and lowering Quality may not reduce it in the same way.
WebP when the browser and destination support it
WebP export depends on browser support. It can be useful for web images, but check both the generated file and the place where you intend to use it. Choose JPEG or PNG when compatibility is more important.
ICO for icon workflows
ICO output is available for software and website icon use. Check the destination’s size requirements first. Exporting an ICO does not create a complete set of icons for every platform.
